The War is Not Over!

998992_4481611698036_889058301_nRepresentative Borris Miles made the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court striking down Texas abortion restrictions Monday in Whole Women’s Health v. Cole:

“I was proud to be part of the efforts to fight against House Bill 2 in 2013. I am grateful that the Supreme Court has recognized what we knew then: That House Bill 2 was a thinly-veiled attempt to prevent women from accessing their right to choice.’

“In the House, we did all we could to weaken the bill. For example, I filed an amendment that would have at least allowed doctors to prescribe medication that would induce termination to rape victims. However, since the health and well-being of women was never their true concern, Republicans shot it down along with all other Democratic amendments.’

“We did everything we could in the House, but all eyes were on the Senate. Wendy Davis stood valiantly in a 13-hour filibuster, fighting to the last second to keep HB 2 from passing. Wendy was a true warrior for reproductive health. With Wendy gone, we need warriors in the Senate more than ever.’

“As your Senator from District 13, I will be a warrior for women’s health, voting rights, a fair criminal justice system, education, a budget that serves all Texans and all other principles we Democrats believe in.”

Miles represents District 146 in the Texas House of Representatives. He is seeking the Democratic nomination to serve as Senator for District 13 on the November ballot. District 13’s current senator, Rodney Ellis, won nomination to Harris County Commissioners Court on June 25th, 2016.
